14 Years. 10 Lessons. One Real Journey.

What Shri Ram Taught Me About Running a Business

By Santosh | Founder, Alliance Tax Experts, Navi Mumbai

I am not writing this to impress anyone.

I am writing this because 14 years of working as a Tax Professional in Navi Mumbai has given me experiences that I wish someone had told me earlier.

I have sat with small business owners who were crying because of a tax notice. I have seen startups shut down because of wrong financial decisions. I have also seen ordinary people build extraordinary businesses — just by doing the basics right.

And one day, while thinking about all of this — I realised that Shri Ram already had all the answers.

Here are 10 lessons from his life — and from my 14 years of real experience in tax consulting, GST compliance, and financial advisory in Mumbai.

---

1. COMMITMENT BEATS COMFORT EVERY SINGLE TIME

Ram's Way: He left for 14 years of exile without complaining. No arguments. No conditions.

In my early years as a tax consultant, I had moments where I could have taken the easy way. Skip a compliance step. Ignore a small irregularity. Keep the client happy in the short term.

I chose not to.

Because I learnt early — discipline in small things is what builds a strong business foundation. Whether it is your income tax filing, your GST returns, or your daily work habits — consistency always wins over shortcuts.

---

2. REPUTATION IS WORTH MORE THAN ANY ADVERTISEMENT

Ram's Way: Called Maryada Purushottam — not for power, but for trustworthiness.

In 14 years, I have barely done traditional advertising. Almost every client at Alliance Tax Experts came through referrals and word of mouth.

One satisfied client brought three more. Those three brought ten more.

In the world of tax and financial consulting, your credibility is your biggest marketing tool. People trust a tax consultant who does things right — not one who promises things that sound too good.

Your reputation, once built honestly, keeps working for you even when you are sleeping.

---

3. THE RIGHT TEAM CHANGES EVERYTHING

Ram's Way: Had Hanuman, Lakshman, Sugriv, Vibhishan — each different, each essential.

There was a time when I was trying to manage everything alone. Client meetings, ITR filings, GST compliance, follow-ups, documentation — everything by myself.

I was burning out fast. And the business was not growing.

The day I started building a team I could actually trust — the entire game changed.

A good business is never one person. It is a system of reliable people working toward the same goal. If you are a business owner still doing everything alone — that is your biggest bottleneck right now.

---

4. EVERY SHORTCUT IN BUSINESS HAS A RETURN DATE

Ram's Way: Followed dharma even when it was difficult — even when nobody was watching.

In tax planning and financial compliance, I see shortcuts being taken every single day. Inflated expenses. Hidden income. Wrong GST claims. Incorrect ITR filings.

And for some time — it works. Until the notice comes.

I have sat with clients who are paying five times more today — in penalties, interest, and legal trouble — because they saved a small amount years ago.

Proper tax planning is not expensive. Fixing bad tax decisions is.

Ethics is not just a value. In finance and compliance — it is the smartest long-term investment you will ever make.

---

5. STRATEGIC ALLIANCES GROW YOUR BUSINESS FASTER

Ram's Way: Alliance with Sugriv gave him an army, a strategy, and ultimately — victory.

In business, the right connections do the same.

I have seen MSMEs in Navi Mumbai grow simply because they connected with the right people. A referral from the right network brought in more business than months of solo effort.

Collaborations, partnerships, and professional networks are not optional anymore — they are essential. Whether you are a freelancer, startup founder, or small business owner — find your Sugriv. Build your alliance.

---

6. STAYING CALM IN A CRISIS IS A SKILL WORTH BUILDING

Ram's Way: When Sita was taken, he stayed focused, planned carefully, and moved forward.

In business, your crisis will come. I promise you — it will come.

A big client stops paying. A tax notice arrives on a Friday evening. A key team member suddenly quits. The market goes down.

I have been through all of it.

The quality of your decision in a crisis depends entirely on how calm your mind is.

Panic makes you react badly. Calm thinking makes you respond smartly. Breathe first. Think second. Act third.

---

7. REAL LEADERSHIP MEANS OWNING EVERYTHING

Ram's Way: Never pointed fingers. Never blamed others. Took responsibility — always.

There were situations where a client was unhappy because of something that was not entirely my fault. It would have been easy to explain, defend, and deflect.

I chose to own it. Fix it. Move forward.

When you protect your team from outside pressure — your team protects your business from the inside.

The best business owners I know own their wins and their losses equally.

---

8. BUILD SOMETHING THAT LASTS — NOT JUST SOMETHING THAT EARNS

Ram's Way: His goal was never just to defeat Ravan — it was to restore dharma and build something meaningful and lasting.

In 14 years, I have met hundreds of business owners across Mumbai. The ones who only ran after quick money — they are either stuck or gone.

The ones who focused on building systems, building trust, building a proper financial structure — they are still growing. Quietly and steadily.

Do not just build a business. Build something your family will be proud of ten years from now.

---

9. CLEAR COMMUNICATION SOLVES MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANY STRATEGY

Ram's Way: Spoke to a forest tribal and a king with the same respect and clarity. Never made anyone feel small.

In my experience — most business problems are not financial problems. They are communication problems.

A misunderstood invoice. A deadline nobody mentioned. A client expectation that was never clearly set.

From day one, I made it a habit — always communicate clearly and early. Tell clients what is happening. Tell them what is next. If something goes wrong — tell them before they find out themselves.

Clients do not leave because of honest mistakes. They leave because they felt ignored.

---

10. PATIENCE AND RIGHT TIMING ARE UNDERRATED BUSINESS SKILLS

Ram's Way: Waited. Prepared quietly. Acted at exactly the right moment — not before, not after.

I have seen business owners expand too fast and collapse. I have seen people invest at the wrong time and lose everything. I have also seen patient, prepared people make one right move and completely change their financial position.

In business — whether it is expansion, hiring, investment, or even choosing your tax consultant— timing matters more than speed.

Do not rush decisions just because others are moving. Prepare well. Wait for the right moment. Then act with full confidence.

CLOSING

14 years ago, I started this journey with one simple belief — do right by your clients, and everything else will follow.

That belief has never failed me.

Shri Ram never had a business degree. But his life is the greatest practical guide to leadership, ethics, patience, and smart decision-making that I have ever come across.

I am still learning from it every day.

If this resonated with you — feel free to share it with someone who needs to read it today.
